40yo woman falls on ice
eee gads - this was written on my discharge papers at the clinic today. makes me feel so old....had a wicked fall on the ice. straight onto my sacrum on my way to class. in two small classroom settings - one at harvard and one at mit - i asked if anyone could recommend a chiropractor. i got blank stares. i miss the bay area!
when the doctor asked me how often i drank - i laughed and said that i don't have time to drink anymore because i am too busy. i thought it was funny. he wasn't amused.

Nah, you ain't old (yet)! I know - the divide between "Western" and alternative medicine around Western medical establishments in Boston is pretty rigid, at times. Still, there are small glimmers of hope - like the Marino Center up on Mass Ave, where they are trying to do "integrated" medicine, and some stuff at Harvard Medical School. Supposedly, there is a new program will have a section of one the major hospitals doing integrated medicine. (don't quote me on this; I haven't kept up with the development, and with budget cuts, who knows when this will ever happen).
When I lived in China, it was so different. There, there was much more harmonization and respect of different approaches. I remember my doctor asking me if I wanted to cure an infection the Western way (with antibiotics) or the Eastern way (with Chinese herbs), talking about the differences between the two (one worked quicker, with side effects, the other more gently, and with virtually none). And, LET ME CHOOSE!!! After all, stuff like acupuncture, Qi-gong, herbal remedies, etc., have been around and tested way, way more than the newer stuff we have over here.
On a more important note, if you need a recommendation for a good chiropractor, I got a couple. Julie YC
